Retail Park Drive-thru:Early Morning
Acrylic on canvas, 2014. 112 cm x 142 cm. The out of town car-dependent retail park is a prime example of the homogenous commercial hinterland now common across so much of the world, irrespective of its indigenous vernacular styles. Utilitarian in the extreme, little more than hangars and large sheds, if car ownership or usage were to dramatically fall, they would be abandoned, to decay like some post-capitalist landscape in a JG Ballard novel. Although based on an actual location near Chester, stripped of signage and corporate fonts, this could be almost anywhere with mass car ownership.
