Once the decision was taken to do drawings as finished works, I began to think in terms of a series, but a series, which in comparison to the mid-size detailed and time-consuming paintings I produce, could be done quickly. I also wanted them to be quite formalistic, some sort of format that recognised my fascination with such things as trades union and church banners, masonic imagery and even scripophily.
